- Diegetic- any sounds that naturally occur in the story e.g the sound of the sea gulls
- Non- diegetic - sounds that are not naturally occurring in the story e.g music
- Synchronous- this is when the sound occurs from whats on the screen
- Asynchronous- this is when the sound occurs from off the screen
