Shot Types

The first shot I identified showing a represenation of gender was a medium shot this was of the women coming out the house with a man and pointing at him. They both look very arguementative towards eachother. This shot shows that the producer has represented these characters through being masculine. This is because they both are being very arguementative this is through there facial expressions and how there speaking very angry to eachother. Also the women points which is very rude these points all show  stereotypical traits of being masculine. This is then followed to a extreme medium shot of the women walking over to her team and demanding them what roles they need to do to solve this crime. This is a masculine representation as its being very controlling and having more power than the rest of them. This is also a stereotypical trait of being masculine. Through these to camera shots there is already evidence that this clip contains the genre of crime. This is because of the convention which is that the women and man walk out the murder scene this shows that they both are the main inspectors. In a crime film there is always two so they can discuss the issues and crime between them to allow the audience to know whats going through there minds and what action there going to do.

The next camera shot is a close up of the man putting his coffe on the table and a medium shot of the description of the man being that he is wearing a smart shirt. He has smart trousers on and he has dark hair with a muscular build. The appearence of him and the prop which is a cup of coffe all are the producers choice of representing masculine. These all are stereotypes of being masculine and are very noticeable to the viewers.

In addition however even though this clip has shown the follwoing representation's of being masculine. There is also representations of being feminine. This is through the extreme medium shot of the women walking down the stairs past her child. She is rustling around with paper work and on the phone trying to organise at the last minute a baby sitter. The representation of being feminnie is that this women is family orientated as she has a young boy. She is very unorgansied and paniking because she has to get to work and she hasnt got anyone to look after her son. She is becoming stressed out and that is why her desk is gettting untidy. These are all steretypes of being feminne and this is why the producer wanted to use these to show this characters femine side.

I then had identified a low angle shot of a tall blad man dressed in black smash through a door. This is then followed through by the camera follwing him through the room. This man is very tall and has a dangerouse and stern face. He is all in black and is surrounded by close up shots of men who are very scruffy and dirty looking. They are smoking and have the attitude of being lazy. There are bottles of alchol around the room this shows that these characters could be drunk. The room is very dark and looks deserted. All the men are sitting down while the tall man in black is standing up and acting very authorative by not caring if he hurts or ruins there room. In these camera shots there is more than one representation of being masculine one being very powerful and violent smashing through there door. The other being very lazy and scruffy looking smoking and drinking alchole.

Following on from this shot there is a master shot this shot is of the man and young boy in the kitchen and they have made popcorn. The pop corn is flying every where. This shows the mans feminine side as he is in the kitchen cooking and this is a stereotypical feminnine thing to do. Also he is with the young boy laughing which shows they are having a good time and shows that this man is very fun to be around.This man is helping out his work partner however further on in this clip there is evidence that they could be more than friends.

The last shot type I identifeid which was showing a represenation of gender is an extreme medium shot of the young boy and man sitting on the sofa watching tv together. This again is representing the man's feminine side as he is being very careing and ocupieing the young boy with love. The conversation they are having is very personal and shows the man letting out his feelings this is very emotional which is a huge stereotype for being feminnine.

Sound

The first sound that I identified was the slow and haunting tune this is non-deigetic and asychronous as it doesnt appear on the screen. This tune happens when the man is looking very masculine and trying to figure out the crime using xrays. This tune also is played when the tall bald man smashes through the door and violently throws another man's head through a damp wall. This tune could be there to represent when the scene is involving a crime and is also there to make the representation of being masculine very intense.
Another sound I identified is the women when she was rustling around with all her paper work and grabbing things to put in her bag these are all diegetic as they came naturally but do not all appear on screen. This is an input in showing this women's feminne side through her paniked behavouir.
There is two sound affects of the tall blad man braking into the door and smashing the man's door through the wall these all are very loud and violent noises that create pain and anger this is to add to the representation of masculine and create a scene of crime and intensity.These sounds are both deigetic and synchronous because they both are on screen sounds.
The last sound I thought linked to the representation of gender is the diegetic noise of the popcorn popping everywhere. This sound hilighted the fun they were having and was a prop that identified there feminne side through cooking in the kitchen. As well as how women never look at instructions which is why everything ends up a diaster which the popping of pop corn everywhere was.

Mice-en-scene

The costumes that represnted gender in this clip were that the representation of masculine costumes  they were either wearing very smart clothing including shirts, trousers and a smart coat. The man who was very violent was all in black this was to match his very dark and evil personality. The other costumes that was in the clip was the lazy men who wore very old,dirty clothing. They didnt look very clean and were unstylish as they only cared about there fags and drink.

The settings and furniture in this clip that represented gender were the first setting which was a street this street was surrounded by a crime team and the camera shot's were all in black and white to show that they could be dealing with huge violence or a murder. There was a police officer who was in this setting and the weather looked cold by what they was wearing to make the scenery very haunting.
The second setting was the womens house this was very unorangised and messy as all her paper work was everywhere and the childs toys were every where as well. The furiture shown in then kitchen was very modern and spaciouse which shows that this clip is in present times. The lighting in the house is very bright which reflected the fun the man and young boy was having.
The last setting was the deserted room. This setting was very dark and contains old and trampy furniture. The walls were very damp which could suggest the building was very old and worn out. The tall, bald man who turned up came out of a car this car was very stylish which could suggest that this man is wealthy through his violence.

The props used in this clip to show the representation of gender were the man who had a cup of coffe this is a steroetype of being masculine as the contrast is that being feminnie you drink tea.

Editing
There was staright cuts through out the whole clip this was to keep the viewers attention on whats going and on and so that each camera shot flows. However there was a few action match's these were one when the man knocks on the womens door then walks through the door. The other is when the tall bald man smashes through the door then walks into the room. The first one represented being feminnine because he politely knocked and waited to be allowed to come through. Where as the other smashed throught the door which is very rude and causing violents which is how the producer had chosen to represent masculin in that very moment.

Criminal Justice- Age

Shot Types
The first shot type I identified was an other the shoulder shot of a women who is a police officer and the young boy who by his anxiouse and frightned face was the first time he had been inprinsoned. The way the producer had decided to represent age for the women who is a  police officer is by being a older age because she contained wrinkles with a very stern face with glasses. The producer also represented a older women who is a police officer with her hair tied up this could inidicate that she isnt a soft and stereotypical female who loves pink and is very girly. But a tough women this could be because of her job but also because thats they way they represented a older women who is police officer in this clip. The women also glares at the boy and says very manly 'what' this is because they have represented older women who are police officers in this clip as very emotionless and intimidating. This could be because of the enviroment they are in they need to behave this way.

In contrast to this the second other the shoulder shot is of a boy. This boys face looks very inocent, no wrinkles and very intimidated by whats around him. This is how the producer has decided to represent younger aged people in this clip using this boy as an example. His eyes are looking everywhere which shows uncomfort and anxiousness as he is scared of the olders around him. He replies with 'nothing' to the older aged women this is because the producer has planned this to show that they are representing the younger age to not back chat and get arguementative but be afraid to answer back.

The second shot type I have identified is a extreme medium shot of a taller but young male who is towering over th young boy. This is because the taller young male is pushing the boundaries and acting very initimadating and blowing in his face to annoy him. This is another way the producer is representing younger aged boys. As this young aged boy is being very agrivating. However then a older man steps in his appearence is containing wrinkles and has no hair. As soon as he steps in the taller young aged male moves away this shows that the representation of older aged men are that they contain more power and control other the younger age.

There is another extreme medium shot of the man who is sharing a cell with the young boy. This shot shows the man with wrinkles, bald, deep voice and aggressive face. This is how the producer has represented older age men's appearences. The older man has sat on the bed and takenis shoes of this conveys that he is more relaxed and fearless compared to the young boy in the extreme medium shot of him getting iritated by the taller young aged male. It also shows that the older age have been there longer and no there surroundings better this could mean that the producer has represented the older to have commited very bad crimes that have long sentences to them.

In contrast to this there is a extreme medium shot of the younger boy. He has a pale face,clear skin, hair and is skinny looking this is how the producer has represented younger aged male's. The appearence of being skinny is to show that they dont have any power or strentgh to them.

There is a shot reverse shot when the older age man is explaining the life at prison to the younger age male who is listening very carefully. The older an then leans very close to the younger boy and says to him to wack the tall young male who was iritaiting him. This could show that the producer is representing the older age to not be role modles and influence the younger to use bad behavouir.

The last shot type I have identified in the prison enviroment is a close up. This is at night when the young boy is in bed. There is loads of noises and because it is his first night which I have identified through the young boy getting confused earlier why a man has jumped on the bunk bed because he didnt know that he was sleeping in the room as well because he is new. The close up shot allows the audience to see his facial expressions very clearly. The producer has used this shot to show that the representation of younger aged boys are that they are very frightned. This is shows through the young boys face and uncomfort as he is rocking in his bed. Therefore he is overwelmed by the experience so far.

The last shot is a medium long shot of the police officer and man in a suit. They are walking towards a car. The police officer is a younger age then the man in the suit. This is represented by the older man in the suit having wrinkles and not as muscular. Whereas the younger male has hair and doesnt contain wrinkles. The man in the suit is being very demanding towards the police officer which could suggest he is his boss. Therefore the producer has represented the older age to have more power and a higher postion.

Sound
There is a asynchronous, diegetic sound of the prison buzzer going of when it goes of the in the cell as a reminder for them all to get in there rooms. The young boy jumps where as the older man knows as he is used to it. This is more evidence that the producer is representing the older aged men to have been in jail for longer then younger aged males's

The second sound I identified is the door slamming which is the prison officers slamming it. This is a asynchronous, diegetic sound as its not shown on screen. The older aged man says the words 'locked up' this infers that he again knows the process that the prisons go through at night as the older age is represented to have been in the prison longer. Where as the young boy is very new and was confused before he was taught by the older man.

Near the end of the clip when the lights have all been switched off. There are sounds that are diegetic and asynchronous. These are of the people in prison either screaming and others saying words like 'shutup' very demandingly. The words said are said very deeply which could suggest that the younger age are screaming of fright and the older age are the intimidating, abusive ones.

Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene of this clip is that the clothing is the younger aged male's are wearing the typical plain blue top and bottoms with no jewlerry this is because they have to wear this clothing as they have been instructed to. However the two older men who star in this clip are wearing there own clothing that look comfortable. This could implie that the producer has represented older age as very rebellious and does what they want. Where as the younger age have the correct clothing on which shows they dont have the guts to not follow the rules.

The setting is very big and empty. As the walls are very plain and voices are echoeing through out the building this is the connation of a prison and shows that the producer has represented all ages wheither young or old can be put into prison as there isnt one target age group which commits crime. The other setting is set in a city which is a urban enviroment. I can identify this through the tall buildings, the noises of cars and how there is a lot of cars. As well as the car park and how there are police officers which in the country side there is meant to be not a lot of crime

The mise-en-scene of the prison rooms/cells are again very empty with plain walls. No windows and very basic uncomfortable furniture. The rooms very small and krostrophobic.

The lighting in the main centre of the prison is very bright as its very open and holds lots of criminals and officers. Whereas the cells have dimmer lighting this is because the producer is showing how isolated and compact the rooms are to show that living in a cell isnt a good place. Therefore trying to show the audience prison life and how negative it is.

The props that are used are that there is a newspaper on the older aged man's bed this could indicate that the producer is representing the older aged men as more assertive and intrested in whats going on. This could be because they have been isolated from the real world for so long that thats the only contact they have.

The body actions I have seen are that the older aged men are more relaxed but also are very tough and intimidating as they arent afraid to get in the younger aged men's faces using very deep and tough voices. Where as in the cell the younger aged boy was standing in the corner and was afraid to even enter the room properly this could suggest fear and uncomfort as thats they way the producer is representing younger age.

Editing
Through out the clip it is mainly sraight cuts to each camera type. This is because the producer didnt want the audience to loose there focus on reality and what is going on in prison life. However when the lights are all switched off it slowly and gradually fades to black this is to flow straight to the next scene which is in the city.There is one part in the clip where the straight cutting is very fast in the cell when the older and younger men are talking directly at eachother. This is when the younger boy has his first conversation with a older aged man in the prsion that he doesnt know. The fast pace of cutting could show his fear and how his hear could be beating fast through him being scared and frightned.
There is a action match of the older age man opening the door then walking through it. He is the first in the cell which could show he is the dominant one and then everyone else enters. Also there is lots of eye line matches in the cell between the older and yonger aged men. This could show that they both have respect for eachother as there not being rude and looking away. But it could also show the younger aged male being very careful that he doesnt not look at him as he doesnt want to show his fear.

Gender- Cutting it

Intial thoughts

My initial thoughts of this clip is that first of all it shows both a man and women expressing the traits of masculine and feminine. This is shown through the romance and emotions they express to each other. For example when the man kisses the women s hand this shows that he cares and loves her which is being very affectionate towards her this is a feminine stereotype. The shot types, sound, mise-en-scene and editing also contribute to the representation of gender as well and are evidence that men and women can contain both masculine and feminine sides to them.

Shot types 
The first shot type that I identified as showing the representation of gender is a medium shot (0.04).This shot is of the women leaning her head on the man's shoulder. The representation of gender in this camera shot is that the women is looking for comfort and protection while showing love and affection in a public service these all show this women's feminine side this is because these are all stereotypes of being feminine. Where as the man is sitting taller and is being a strong and masculine person as he is protecting her. These are all traits of being masculine therefore this is how the producer has shown gender. Also the man is a high level then the women this shows that he has more power out of them both.

The next shot is another medium shot (0.07) this  camera shot shows the man kissing the women's hand. This shows the feminine side to the man as he is expressing his love and emotions to the women. He is also being very romantic and not shying away from  love. Also the women is showing a feminine side as she is smiling and has a love struck face this suggests that she is fallen in love with this man. All these traits are stereotypes for feminine. This shot shows that a man and women both contain a feminine side.

Another camera shot that uses the representation of gender is a medium long shot (1.30) this shot shows the women leaning into the cab window to pay the cab driver. This shows the women s masculine side this is because stereotypically the man usually is the main money earner this could suggest that the women earns the most out of both of them in there relationship This also shows the women s power as she does it without any hesitation. However the character of the man doesn't contribute or say he will pay this shows his masculine trait as being very selfish.

The next shot type is a close up shot (2.02) this is of the man and women kissing. This shot shows the mans feminine side as he is showing his feelings and emotions through kissing his soon to be wife. Also it shows that he is proud to be with her and doesn't care about kissing her in public as he loves her. it also shows the women feminine side as she is expressing her love towards him through kissing as well.

Another camera shot is a medium long shot/ establishing shot (2.10) this shows the women running gracefully to the hospital. The producer has chose to represent femininity through the appearance and look of the women. This is because she is very slim and petite. Her hair is long and curled this shows a very girly look to her. Also the long coat she is wearing shows part of her legs this is seen to be the stereotype of a women being sexy.

The next camera shot is a close up shot (2.45) this is of the women crying this is because she has just found out some bad news. This is represented through her feminine side this is because the stereotype for being feminine is being very emotional she is showing this through crying. This shows that she isn't scared to express her feelings in-front of other people.


The last shot type that shows the representation of gender is a medium shot (2.49) this shows the masculine qualities of the man through his appearance and look. This is because he is wearing a suits (blazer) and a shirt. Also he has  very tidy and trimmed facial hair which shows he cares about how he looks. He is also stirring his coffee and has a very stern facial expression.





Sound
The first sound that represents gender is the diegetic, synchronous sound that is of the man kissing the women s hand. This shows the mans feminine side as he is showing is feelings and not being a stereotypical masculine who would be emotionless. The couple just got married therefore the man is proving to the women that he loves her and that them getting married was something he always wanted.

How ever the man also uses the sound "shh" which is a diegetic, synchronous sound which shows his masculine side as he is being dominant and interrupting the women when she is speaking to him. This shows rudeness but the women does not become argumentative with him as he carries the power. These are all characteristics of being masculine.

The last sound that I identified as showing a representation of gender is in two situations the first situation is when the women is crying because she has been told bad news and the man is outside the hospital admiring his wedding ring. The sound of a non-diegetic song is played in the background this song has the feelings of love but also is very slow and intense which represents the feminine side of both of them as they are expressing tears and love. The last sound is of the man at the end where there is a non-diegetic sound of a heart beating this shows his love and how panicked he felt when he saw his wife run over this is a feminine characteristic, how ever he ran very manly and quickly to her and then the diegetic sound of him crying was a sign of how heart broken and upset he was as he was expressing his feelings this is shown to be a feminine trait as well.

Mise-en-scene

In this clip the producer has shown representation  of gender through the man being masculine because he has been chose to wear a smart coat and blazer as well as a shirt this shows a high and authoritative trait. Also the man is tall and has dark hair this is a stereotype for a masculine man. The actions of the man are very affectionate therefore his feminine side has been chosen to be shown through the way he he acts towards his wife. A prop he uses is when he is mixing a coffee cup. Coffee is a stereotypical drink for a man which shows a masculine characteristic.

Where as the women is wearing make-up this is shown to show her beauty and to cover up any spots or part she wants to hide. This shows her feminine traits as she is being very conscience or caring about the way she looks towards her husband. Also this shows that she wants to make effort to impress her husband this is a stereotypical action that many females do. The women has long curly hair and has part of her legs out these are all girly and sexy feminine characteristics. Her actions are very love struck and emotional which are feminine traits as well.

The main setting in this clip is the hospital this setting has con nations of a white looking van with a green first aid cross and flashing lights the denotation of this is a ambulance this is shown in the clip so that the audience immediately work out that the setting is a hospital. The streets are very busy as there are a lot of cars driving in the road this is shown to build up the ending. Theres small markets around the hospital this suggests that this is a town where this clip is set.

Editing
At the beginning there is a few shots where the camera goes back and forth to the man and women using a close up shot this to identity what representation of gender they are portraying through there detailed facial expressions. Also this is another way to show a conversation.

Another form of editing is when the women is shown in the doctors crying because she has just heard the bad news it then goes to a straight cut and flows to the man where he is outside admiring and showing his love for the ring and his wife you can tell he is thinking about positive things. Then it goes back to the women showing action match as she is crying again this shows her feminine side as she is showing her emotions.

Shot Types

The first shot type is an extreme close up (001). The extreme close up is of a birthday hat and balloons surrounding it. This establishes that the opening scene is going to start of with somebody's birthday. This means that the film starts as an equilibrium which follows he theorist of Todorov  as its a normal celebration where everyone is happy and come together to celebrate someones special day.

 The sound in this shot is a non-diegetic sound that starts of very slow this
is to show coontrast as birthdays are very happy and high spirited days
and the mysteriouse music gives the scene a hint that this film doesnt
contain perfectness throughout.

The mise-en-scene of this shot is that
the colours are bright and bold which are typical colours for a birthday
the ballons and hat all represent that this scene is showing someones
birthday and the lighting is very bright to link with the celebration.
The props are postioned on a table this could suggest that they are in
someones home which could convey this film could involve a family.

The editting of this shot is a straight cut this is to keep the shots flowing
and keep the scene relistic to the audience.

The next still shot then is a close up shot (0.09). This shot is of a young girl who is shocked by the present she is previously opened. The close up shot is correctly framed as there is no excessive space above or below the little girls face. It just shows her face in the shot. This shot links to the first shot which was a extreme close up shot.

The sound in this shot is non-diegetic where it continues the mysterious
and slow deep music which has a piano playing over the top this is
to keep up the intenstiy of the piece and again put attention on how inocent this
young girl is and wheither something will happen to her in the film. There
is also a diegetic but asynchrnouse sound where of screen there is the young girl
laughing but this is a natural sound. The sound is a cute laugh which i
feel creates this scene to be very creepy and again giving clues that this girl
could be in some sort of danger

. The mise-en-scene of this shot is the setting in the background
is a home kitchen with warming colours and modern wooden furntiure to show that this family
is have a close relationship and live a normal lifestyle. The lighting is very bright to represent the happiness the young girl is expressing. The actions and body language the young girl is showing is very shocked and excited as her incoence and yougness is brought through. The shot is showing her on her own this could show that at one point in the play she is isolated and weak where she cant escape.From what i can see she is wearing a pink casual top this is a stereo typical colour
for a girl which could suggest that she is very girly and as she is wearing a tiara this shows that her family think of her as a princess someone very special that if something happend to her it would heeart brake them all. Her face is very soft this is to emphasis her inocence even more.

 The editting of this shot is again staright cut this is to keep the shots flowing. There is insitutes on this shot which say who the producers are this is a key element to show that this clip is a film opening.

Next there is a extreme medium shot  (0.17) this shot establishes that there is a young girl and and her mum therefore this is there relationship this is because they are sitting close together and showing affection. The shot also shows the scenery which is a modern home setting this conveys this is a modern time where this film is set. The expressions on the young girls face is very happy and excited and she is living a perfect life. This could question that something will go wrong with her life. The framing is again correct as it shows chest upwards with no unwanted space to take the audience's focus of the characters. The lighting in this shot is very bright to match the positive and joyful mood that is being presented.

The sound in this shot is non-diegetic this sound still contain the mysterious
and tense slow tune but has an added sound of a knife being sharpend it sounds
very slick and this could suggest that this young girl further in the film will
be in danger or someone could threaten her using dangerous weapons.

The mise-en-scene in this clip is the young girls mum is wearing lace top half and has stylish hair this suggests she is very fashionable and young. The expression the mum has on her face is very happy and looks like she treasures her daughter this is because her expressions are directly aimed at her daughter because she is looking at her. The young girl still has an excited look on her face and the setting is still in the kitchen with modern coloured furniture this suggests homely atmosphere. The lighting is still vey bright and the toy horse is revealed as the young girls present this suggests she is an animal lover and has an interest in horse riding. There is institutes of credits on this shot as well which shows that this is a film opening.

The editing of this clip is a straight cut again this is to keep the shots flowing to make sure the audience understands what's happening.



Following this shot there's a  close up shot (0.20) this shot shows the mum holding the birthday cake with the number five on it. This establishes that its the young girls birthday. As well as the character of the mum being there when she is opening her presents and now giving her the cake this shows that her mum is the dominant parent by the relationship with her and her daughter. This shot and all of the shots above have a fuzzy look to them which shows that this is a video from the past that is being played. The shot is well framed and questions that could be asked by the audience is why this flash back is being shown, what significants has it got on other characters in the film. This shot is used in a sequence more than once in a quick speed this could represent how quickly time has gone.

The sound in this clip is non-diegetic. The sound changes to a sharp and quick
sound that freezes every time the sequence of close up shots happen. This sound
could be used to highlight this celebration and to keep the intensity up.

The mise-en-scene of this shot is that there is a birthday cake that is very
girly as it is white and pink. The candles are lit for the young girl to blow out. There
is also the number 5 on the cake this indicates her age which shows how innocent
and young she is. The lighting is still very bright to express the happy mood.
Also the mum is holding the cake this could suggest that further in the film she
is the dominant parent.

The editing of this shot is straight cuts again but the sequence of close up shots
cut very quickly this emphasis the intensity and the moment.

The shot then goes to a black out and fades quickly and sharply into a extreme medium shot (0.29) this shot contrasts with the previous shots as its lighting is very dark and shows how the previous shots were this established character which is a man was dreaming and having a flash back about a memory that happened is his past. The shot is very fast paced and then slows back down to normal speed when he wakes up. This mans sitting on his own which could suggest he is alone.

The sound in this shot is a diegetic video tape ending this conveys that this was
video that this man was watching back on this shows that the young girl and
mum in the video have a relation towards him.

The mise-en-scene in this shot changes and the lighting is very dark and his head
laid back on the wall this shows he is in his bedroom and has fallen asleep dreaming of
the video he has just watched. The man is wearing dark clothing this could reflect his mood.

The editing going into this clip is a fade this is because the lighting fades from
very bright to dark this is because it shows the end of a particular section of
time this is because the video was the past and it has now finished.


Following this there's a master shot (0.47) this is of the man laying on his bed. The setting is very modern which looks like an apartment that could be in a city. The lighting is still very dark but the lamp was put on to make the mans bored and empty face stand out. This could suggest that he is missing something in his life or regrets his past as there was a flash back. Within the first 50 seconds it has established the three main characters these characters all have a relation to each other.

The sound in this shot is diegetic but asynchronous as there's the sound of birds in the background tweeting this suggests that this is the early morning.

The mise-en-scene of this clip is that he is in a living room. The living room has a sofa, lamp and coffee table this shows he is sitting in a living room. The furniture is very simple and manly this could suggest he is in some sort of bactular pad. The lighting is still very dark this is because it is the morning it could suggest his mood of very depressed. His facial expressions are very tired as its the morning.

The editing of this shot is straight cut this is to keep the new scene flowing.
This shot is very well framed as it fits all the setting in the shot to make it clear its a master shot.

As the man sits up and gets of the bed there is a close up shot (0.56) this shot is of a frame of older girl riding her horse. This frame is by his bed this suggests that this girl means a lot to him as when people have photographs framed up it represents someone special to them. This establishes that the relationship between this man and girl is father and daughter. The girl in the frame is showing a happy expression on her face which matches the young girl in the flash back this could suggest that they are the same character but just grown up. The title of the clip then appears saying "taken" this suggests that the equilibrium could be disturbed for this girl. The lighting in this shot is still dim which suggests that something dangerous is going to involve the characters of the man and young girl.

Then the scene massively changes to a establishing shot (1.00) the lighting in this shot is very bright. There are lots of cars which establishes a city. The main character and the other people driving the cars are driving on the left side which suggests they are in a American city. There's huge sky scrapers in the background and bright coloured American restaurants by the sides of the roads. The roads are very long contained traffic lights and there are palm tree's by the roads this suggests a symbol of hollywood. There isn't a huge amount of people or cars in the shot this could suggest that it is the morning.

The sound in this clip is diegetic, synchronous sound of cars driving on the roads. There's the sound of beeping of horns which is diegetic but asynchronous as its not on screen this just adds to the atmosphere of busy roads and streets as its in the city.

The mise-en-scene of this clip is that there's sky scrapers, American restaurants, traffic lights, cars and road sign this all indicates that this is a city setting. The lighting is beginning to get bright this shows that its the morning. The cars are going quite quickly this is because everyone is getting to work. The sounds are typical city life sounds and the retro and bright colours show this is an American city.

The editing of this clip is straight cut again this is to keep the shots flowing.

Regional Identity- North and South extract

Initial Thoughts
My initial thoughts on this clip when i first watched it was that the clip had a very old fashioned regional identity this was shown through the women who wore long dresses and the men who wore old fashioned neck ties or scruffy looking clothing. The streets conveyed hugely that the regional identity of this clip that the director was representing was not modern. This was because of the tight streets and washing hanging on the lines as there was no technology. Also the candle lit lamps as in modern time we have lamp posts. The sounds i noticed and heard first were noise which expressed chaoticness this indicated that this clip was showing the regional identity of mainly workers in the victorian times.







Shot Types
The first shot that showed this clips representation of regional identity was this medium shot (0.01) this medium shot is of an old women who is wearing a tied hat that is made out of scarf material and an old duel wooly jumper with a crumpled blouse underneath. These clothes are used to show that the regional identity for this women is the victorian period of time. Her clothing looks very washed out and old fashioned this is because they didn't have washing machines at this time therefore not being able to have there clothes well cleaned and looking very tidy.

The second shot type is an other the shoulder shot (0.09) of a man the representation of the regional identity of he victorian times is where the man is wearing a suit and a tie that is tied like a scarf. His hair is grey and his beard is styled to the side. His clothing again is very old fashioned and by him wearing a suit gives a very high authority and smart victorian look. The background shows thick wooden frame and the wall paper is very old fashioned this is representing how the victorians decorated there house. The wall paper looks very elegant which could represent that these two characters have a high status in there society.

The next shot type is a tilt shot (2.10) this tilt shot shows the village and how this clip has represented the regional identity of the victorian times. The street is very tight and compacted which looks very damp and dark. There is washing hung over lines in the street as they didn't have washing machines in the victorian times or tumble dryers. The walls are stone and have candle lit lamps around them to try and light up the streets. The women in the shot is wearing a long victorian dress and is dressed very dark to represent she is a worker in this time as she has lots of soot and smoke around her.

Following this shot there is a extreme medium shot (2.23) this shot shows the cobbled and stone walls which this clip represents to be victorian time. As well as a young and innocent girl wearing a round hat and long draped dress which ribbon to tie the dress up with. This is a typical victorian dress that is stereotyped if someone asked what a women s dress would look like in the victorian times this is what i would describe. The atmosphere looks very earey which could represent that in the victorian times the streets weren't very clean and were dangerous to be out on your own.

Another shot type that show regional identity of this clip is a wide angled shot (3.05) this shot shows men and women rushing down the stairs to catch there train. The man are wearing old caps and  clothing that is very dirty looking. They look very scruffy and have soot all other there faces. This shows the representation of chimney sweepers and workers in the victorian time. The women in this shot are wearing hats and have shoals on which have an old fashioned look to them. The chaotic atmosphere and huge amount of people indicate that in the victorian times the streets were full of busy workers.

The last shot that i identified showing regional identity was the low angle shot (4.27) this shot shows an old fashioned horse and carriage this shows that the director has decided to represent the victorian times with transport using old carriages. There are scatters of people but not as much people as there was heading for the train. This shows that there were more poor low status workers then there was high status victorian men and women who could afford to travel using a horse and carriage.

Sound

The first sound that i heard was the diegetic, asynchronous sound of the busy streets this represents the regional identity of the victorian times as a very chaotic and stressful atmosphere. The noise stayed the same level through out the whole clip this shows that the victorian times were extremely noisy all the time. The second sound i heard was a non-diegetic sound of a tune that the director chose to put in this clip. The tune sounded very dangerous and faded into the next scene.This shows how complex and slick this clip is. The sound represents the regional identity of victorian times as a very hard time to live in and how dangerous it can be even if you are of a high status. The third sound i heard was a diegetic sound of children playing this shows that young children in this time could of been at school which shows that in the victorian times children were educated. The next sound is another diegetic sound which was of a dog barking the representation of regional identity for this was that in the victorian times animal especially dogs were roaming free and contributed to the business and noise of the streets. Another diegetic,asynchronies sound of a train coming to its station this was very loud and represents that this was a very popular way to travel in the victorian times but also shows that this was one of the reasons they had so much smoke in the air. As soon as the train came to its station there were sounds of  hundred of feet rushing down the stairs this sound was both diegetic and synchronise this emphasises the amount of people using this transport in the victorian times and shows how workers adapt to being rushed all the time and how if they don't push through and run fast they will never get home from a hard days work. The last sound i heard which appeared at the end was of horse hooves this sound is diegetic, asynchronies and represents that in the victorian times another way of getting places was a horse and carriage.

Mise-en-scene
In this clip through out the whole of the clip the men wear either old fashioned suits and neck ties or scruffy duel clothing that have soot and dirt all other them. Where as the women wear hat scarfs that cover there hair and long dresses that are down to there feet to cover there body. This shows that the representation of regional identity is very old fashioned and victorian. The scenery is very rural small and compacted and always damp. There are old fashioned cobbled walls, candle lit lamps and washing all over the village. This show how this clips regional identity is not modern and is in the past. As the clip goes on there is a women mixing a huge bowl of something which is bubbling this shows the tradition of the victorian times and how different modern times is to then. Most of the population in the clip are men workers which is shown when the men are coming down the stairs to catch the train this shows that the men go out to work and the women stay at home and cook and clean which is why there clothing fits there role. Near the end of the clip there is a horse and carriage this represents victorian time through the old fashioned transport.

Editing 
At the beginning of the clip the women is always looking up the man and the man is always looking down at the women. This is an eye-line shot and shows how the man in this clip has more power and authority as the women. This is shown by the eye contact and his height. After there conversation is over the women fades into darkness and the music plays before the scene changes this is very complex and slick as then it leads to the next scene without the viewer realising.

In conclusion i think that this clip shows regional identity very well and it represents the rural and victorian times in a very realistic way. The use of shot types,sound,  mise-en-scene and editing all contribute to this. The clip especially shows the difference between men and women by there roles and clothing in the victorian times. As well as showing the power the men have over the women.

You can also be born into a class for example if you are born into a family that are all upper class then you will most likely continue there business or have a private education where you will move on to a upper class job.

The postion of an individual in relation to others for example if there was a teacher and students in one room the teacher would have the high status and the students would be a low status. But if then the teacher had a meeting with there boss then the teacher would then change to low status.

Eastenders clip- Age

Initial thoughts
Patrick is represented to be talking and gesturing around the table to a group of adult friends. The other people on the table are listening this shows they have respect for him as he is older and this clip is representing adults as well- mannered and respectful people.

Patrick is telling his friends/ family a story they have crafted this as grandparents have lots of stories to tell there relatives therefore they have represented this character through this.

 The denotation is of empty bottles of wine and half drank wine on the table. The connation of this is that the adults have drank it.They have represented the characters being wealthy adults as they are drinking wine this is known to be a older and sophisticated drink.

Denise says "chelsea taking an interest in something how much you had to drink" this shows that this clip has represented the younger people as chelsea is as people who aren't interesting in other peoples history and pass story therefore they are portraying this is a rare thing that she is actually taking an interest. Also its showing that denise doesnt know her daughter as well as she should as she doesnt know that she is intrested in there histroy and culture.

They also represent chelsea as very stubborn as she is a younger generation then the others. As some of her comments have attitude and can come across disrespectful.

Libby says very intellectual comment about the riots but then refers back to Patrick who is older to check she is correct. This shows they have represented Patrick as a knowledgeable, wise older man as he has lived longer then the others therefore has more experience.

Shot types
At the beginning of the clip there is a medium shot (0.11) of Patrick telling his family a story about an occasion that is in there culture. This shot represents how grandparents are known to tell stories to there family therefore the producer as represented Patrick to be a older aged man. His clothing he is wearing ia wasit coast and smartly dressed shirt this shows that Patrick is an older man and they have represented him to appreciate his age and dress neatly. The colours that he is wearing match his culture of jamaican as well.

There is an over the shoulder shot of Patrick and Chelsea (0.56) this shows that Patrick has been represented as an older aged man as he is wearing a wasit coast and shirt which is an older way to dress, he has no hair and is represented to be a very jolly and happy older man as he is smiling. Whereas in contrast chelsea is represented as a younger aged girl through her bright colours and trendy clothing with hoop earings which are represented to be a young trend for teenagers.

Next there is a medium shot of denise (0.50) saying 'ah chelsea taking an intrest in something, how much you had to drink girl' this conveys that because chelsea is represented as a younger age/ generation she is thought of to not be taking an intrest in history and her culture but going out drinking and clubbing instead. This also indicates that her mum doesnt know her as well as she should.

There is also a extreme medium shot (2.45) of libby when she is saying to her family about the riots and how she learnt it at school this shows that she is represented as a young teenager as she is in education. Also she is refering back to Patrick as her face is angled to be facing him even though Patrick isnt in the shot this is because she is asking Patrick if she is right. This conveys that Patrick is represented as older genration as he knows more knowledge about the riot as he lived where it all happend. I know this because the young man sitting next to denise said that he heard he did and Patrick agreed that he did.

There is a high angle shot (2.06) this shows how Patrick has been postioned at the top of the table and all the others bunched up leaning forward to show how intrieged and intrested they are. This implies that Patrick who is represented as an older aged man has more power then the others and the others are weaker as they havnt lived as long as him. This clip also shows how the representation of younger age which is chelsea is slouching  chair this is to represent that younger people try to act cool and trendy to fit in.

Sound
In this clip there is a diegetic, asynchronouse sound of jamican music this shows there culture that they live. The music isnt upbeat pop music which indicates that this is Patricks music of choice as it is represented to be a more older type of music as its a lot slower and calming so that conversations can happen while it is playing. Libby makes a faint noise when she is moving her chair forwards this is an diegetic, synchronouse sound and represents how intrieged the younger generation are to listen and learn about there own history and culture. At the end of the clip there is the sound of a phone ringing this is a diegetic, synchronouse sound. The mobile phone is picked up by chelsea this represents she is a young teenager as teenagers are known to have mobile phones and always using them. By the phone being a mobile phone also suggests that she is very modern which younger people are represented to be very modern and contain up to date technology.

Mise-en-scene
Patrick is wearing very old fashioned smart clothing as he is wearing a shirt and wasit coat this is how the producer is showing older aged men. He also is wearing the colours of his culture this is to show that he has lived and experienced it. His accent is jamican which is evidence that he contains strong culture and is why he is informing all his family about it because he has the most knowledge out of all of them. Whereas the producers have decided to represent younger aged women and men as wearing bright colours, casuall trendy clothing that is more simple looking then Patrick and doesnt contain there culture as they didnt experience there culture. This is because there accents are very common London accent which means they were born in England. This is why they contain less knowledge then Patrick. The house walls and furntiure all contain the jamican culture and have warming jamican colours to show that this is where they live and that they chose to still keep with there culture even though they aren living in Jamica. The lighting is very enclosing and dark this is to show the closeness of all the different ages and that they all are a loving family.

Editing

There is an extreme medium shot of Chelsea saying ' alright i want bother then' and then another extreme medium shot of libbys reaction where she rolls her eyes acting smart (1.00) this shows that the producer has represented both these young girls as very challenging towards eachother and always making comments to eachother that could start an argument.

The Producer is someone who makes the media.
The Consumer is someone who reads the media.
The media is a text that people read.

The system of encoding and decoding is:
The producer encodes the text then the text is transmitted and the consumer decodes the text.

The encoding and decoding has to be right to work. For example if the message was in a different language and the receiver doesnt know that language the receiver could miss interpret it. Therefore both messages have to match.

Key words in Media

Gate Keeper- Decides what they put through to the media/news or not e.g sensor who decides what age you have to be to watch certain films.

Prefer reading- Where the consumer takes away what the producer was intended.

Denotation- That there are empty bottles on the table and two people sitting on the sofa.

Connation- That they are drunk and have drank them.

Oppositional reading- When someone makes a conscious rejection or subversion of the preferred meaning.

Negotiated reading- When someone understands the meaning but doesn't relate to them so its of no interest to them to decode it.

Semiology- The study of signs and symbols.

Mode of Address- The way the media talks to there audience e.g the news is very formal, theres no negotiations, the reporter talks directly to the camera. This makes the audience trust them as they are being direct and authoritative. This media also makes the audience learn.

The effect that media has on the audience.

Hypodermic Needle Theory

This theory has a direct effect on its audience. The theory suggests that the media passes through to the conscience of the audience that are passive. Directly by injecting them with messages that trigger a desired response. This producer (media maker) manipulates the audience and changes there view, behaviour and thinking of the media text. The audience take this in and trust what the media are presenting to them.


The step flow Theory 
This theory shows that the audiences thinking and behaviour is proceeded through by opinion leaders.  The individuals called opinion leaders who pay close attention to the media and its messages receive the information. The opinion leaders then pass on there own interpretations to the media content.Opinion leaders are quite influential in getting people to change there attitudes and views on the media. The audience follow the opinion leaders views and then become passive. The audience take this is in not directly like the hypodermic needle modle theory but by a two step flow. For example if Jeremy Clarkson says that a certain car is bad then the audience would automatically not go out and buy the car.

Gratification Theory
This theory tends to give an audience a bit more respect as active decisions are made. The members of the audience aren't passive but take an active role of taking in and interpreting media in there own life's. This theory is less controlling as the audience are making there own decision of how there going to interpret the media.
Diversion- Escape or emotional release from daily pressure.
Personal Relationship- Virtual companionship and socialilrity of discussing T.V with others.
Surveillance- Finding out whats going on in the world- Voyeurism.
De-sensatised- If you see something a lot of times you will sensitise yourself to it e.g phobias.

Shameless clip- class

Class is used in this clip by using shot types, sound, mise-en-scene and editting. Class is cateogories that are seperated  by the types of quality that people contain. There are three main types of class the first is upper class this is the social group that has the highest staus most people who are upper class own businesses which are jobs like a lawyers, Doctors and Baristers. This class are the wealtiest class. The second class is working class this class is the people that are employed and earn there money through there wages. The work they mainly do is industrail and manual work for example on building sights, electritions and plumbers. The last class is the lower class this the class that has the lowest status this is because they have lack of work, low education or skills.

Intial Thoughts
My intial thoughts of this clip is that as soon as the dad comes down the stairs i can assume that he is of a low class because he has worn out, messy clothing with greasy long hair and i can tell he has no respect for the way he looks. His family are all down stairs sitting round the table and the dad strolls down this conveys that he doesnt care about spending time with them if they were an upper class family they would all be sitting round the table together talking politely. The language they use as they swear at eachother also is a low class feature I noticed straight away.



Shot Types
In this clip shot types are used to portray class. The first shot type is a medium long shot (0.03) this is of the dad walking down the stairs and it shows from his knees and upwards. In the shot you can see the stairs and the front door this conveys a typical council house which shows there not of an upper class. He is wearing scruffy clothing which is untucked and dirty looking. His hair looks very greasy and he has a rough looking beard that doesnt look clean or tidy. His voice is very emotionless. He comes down the stairs on his own as he had just woken up this suggests he is very lazy and has no job to motivate himself to get up for. All these points show that he is of a low class.

The next shot is a master shot (0.05) this is where the camrea is on the place where all the action is occuring. In this case it is the table, kitchen area. There is two older boys, a older girl with a young baby and a young boy. They look very family orientated. In the master shot there is a lot rubbish all over the table and window seal. There is also beer cans and alchol on the table that hasnt been cleared away. This shows they dont have any respect for there house and are very unhygneic.This also shows they are of a low class.

Then this shot leads to a extreme medium shot of there dad (0.14). They all look up to there dad as they are sitting down and the dad is standing up. There dad is shown to be there role modle but by there dialgue in the shot they are disgusted by him. The dad is supposed to be caring for them but instead he is acting very immature for his age this suggest low class as he hasnt lived in the real world where you have to work hard to earn a living. By the shot being a extreme medium shot it gets the dads actions and reactions much more detailed and empahsises his immature nature.

This leads to a close up shot (0.17) of one of the son's replying to his nonsense talk. This is to show that the children talk back to there dad and argue using swearing language. This conveys they are a low class and upper class people wouldnt speak to that strong extent to eachother. The close up shot shows the reaction of the son very clearly as well.

Another shot of the daughter replying to there dad is a medium shot (0.30) saying that he had taken 6 E's last night which are drugs and her reaction is a very sarcastic laugh. This shows class as taking drugs is a very low status thing to do. As well as the children all knowing and not being completely ashamed about it shows that they have given up on trying to arrange his life in order. This also emphasises that the dad has a very low class as he isnt being a good role model to all the children.

Once the son who mostly is speaking to the dad gets up it flows through to an over the shoulder shot (0.47) this is where things get more intense and it shows how the dad has lied to his own children. This shows the son risiing to his dad's level which shows that his son has just has enough class as his dad. The phrase respect your elders isnt shown through this clip as the son doesnt care that he is argueing and disrespecting his dad even though his dad diserves it this shows low class.

There is another close up in the clip (2.00) where the dad is replyig to his daughter that his job is talk a lot of crap.This shows that he isnt employed and that he doesnt even care that he cant provide the standard essentials for his own children's upbringing this illustrates low class. As he doesnt have a job and his actions in life arent the correct ones.

Once the scene changes to outside there house there is a quick pan shot (2.07) that starts from the main subject they are talking about to the dad and kids. There is also a long shot (2.24) this is of a tourtise crawling towards the road. This is key to show low class as not every day do you see a tourtise crawling around the streets. The dad and children dont react to this untill he gets run over. This shows that are used to there lifestyle being low class/ status.

Lastly there is an establishing shot (3.18) from above which establishes where the scene had taken place. outside there house there are rotten table and arm chairs with rubbish all over them. There is a washing machine outside as well which appears to be broken this shows that they are low class as upper class people wouldnt leave there front in a complete mess and wouldnt have a broken washing machine dumped outside they would have there front well presented.

Sound Types
In this clip there is also sound to illustrate the use of class in this clip the first sound being a non diegetic tune (0.01) that is very slow and calming. This tune starts the same time as the clip when the dad is walking down the stairs. The tune indicates that the dad doesnt care about the way he lives and he represents a hippy like person as he has a lazy nature and acts like a syco. The sound represents this and his low class/status.

The second sound is a diegetic and asynchrnouse noise of the dad chucking his shoes on the floor. This shows he doesnt have respect for himself or his belongings which shows low class and that he doesnt have respect for his house either.

In the background of the children and dad's conversations there are faint noises of people in the streets this is a diegetic, asynchrnouse sound (0.19) this shows that they live in a common area not a private which indicates they are not of an upper class.

The next sound that shows class is a non-diegetic tune (1.24) that starts after his daughter says "we want you" this shows that even though there class is low and they are always disgusted of there dad's behavouir and how he treats them they still love him and care about them as they are very family orientated and share the same feelings and emotions that the working and upper class both feel.

There is another non-diegetic sound tune (2.05) that is more upbeat this starts before the scene starts which is a very seamless effect. The music is used to change the scene. This tune stays in the background of the scene while the dad and children are talking.
This tune stops when the tourtise gets run over this shows that even though they are of a low class they still are very concerning people.

The last sound is a diegtic, synchronouse sound (3.14) this is of the children all laughing. They are laughing at how there caravan was sold for a little amount of money and that here dad had been ripped off. This shows that even though there class is low and they dont have alot of money they still think postiative and dont take situation to seriously.

Mise-en-scene
The Dad in this clip is wearing dirty and old clothing that is worn very scruffed. He has long greasy hair to his shoulders and his voice and manner shows he is a low class. The older boys in this clip are wearing track suits and the young baby is wearing a stero typical pink for a girl tracksuit this shows that they dress like chavs and that they have a low class as they dont care what there appearence looks like to others.

 The language they say to eachother is mainly swearing and this is because the dad uses this language when speaking to them which sets a bad example for the children who repeat what the dad is saying. This is also very bad as there is a young boy and baby and they dont give any consideration they are young and shouldnt be listening to this swearing language.

 The daughter is in the kitchen this shows the sterotype that females are always working in the kitchen doing the cooking and cleaning. This is very bad on the dad as he wakes up late and doesnt care that he isnt cooking for his children being the responsible adult. The house is very basic and compact for the amount of people living there this shows they cant afford a bigger house with more space for them to live in. They do alot of hand gestures and pointing to eachother this shows rudeness and no respect for eachother as they are always argueing with eachother.

 When the scene changes to outside the girl is still wearing her dressing gown this shows that she doesnt care if any of the public see her. Lastly the buisness man is wearing a suit and tie and has paper work this shows he is upper class. His voice is posh and he uses words such as 'expenses' and 'deducted'.

Editing
 There is a lot of eye matches where all the children are looking up at there dad and there dad is looking down at them at the begining of the clip when they are all sitting around the table and the dad is standing infront of them. This shows that the dad has more power and authority but in this case he doesnt as the children swear and point at him which shows that they are just as bad as the dad with there bad manners and having no respect for anything. There is individual extreme shots of the dad saying 'me' repetivly this is editing as the shots all flow and are all relavant to eachother. Also the daughter in the kitchen is a medium shot and is staring at the dad talking to him. The dad isnt in the shot but by the direction she is staring we know that she is talking to her dad. The shot flows to another medium shot of the dad responding which is evidence that the daughter was talking to him. There is also a zoom in of the dad when the daughter says 'we want a family, we want you' this zoom in is used on the dad to get a close up then an extreme close up to emphasis and see his reaction. The last editing part i noticed was an action match shot of the tourtouise when there is a shot of the tourtouise crawling to the road and then one of him getting run over by the caravan this is a match shot as they are the same subject shot that flow to show a journey.

Sterotypes
In this clip there is use of the sterotype of class. The class that i have noticed in this clip is working class. The stereotypes that have been shown in this clip for working class are the  family live in a average small cramped house. The Dad is wearing very messy clothing and has greasy long hair if he was upper class then he would be very neat and wearing a suit. They are swearing and there accents are very common this is a stereotype for working class even though upper class could communicate like this. They are family orientated and the Dad is unemployed as the daughter says 'you are full of crap dad' and the dad replys 'thats my job' this indicates that he is jobless. Thefore even if you are unemployed you are still classed as working class.



In conclusion i feel that this clip called 'shameless' was very good at expressing class through the 4 main terms shot types, sound, mise-en-scene and editing. The way the charcters dressed there actions and there levels of power also contributed to the subject of gender.
