Hotel Babylon- Ethnicity

In this clip the producer represents ethnicity through camera angles, sound, mise-en-scene and editing. Ethnicity is different social groups that contain the same cultural traditions.

The first camera angle I identified that represented ethnicity was when the clip began with a long shot this camera angle was of a black man serving a customer he is wearing a suit and looks very smart and professional. His manner is very polite and he has a happy expression on his face. Following this is a pan shot which shows the black man walking very proudly with a non diegetic sound in the background which is very calm which reflects his mood. This camera angle then flows through to close up shot reverse shot of another black man. This black man is wearing hardly any clothes and has a very slang talk for example 'hey never better blud, never better man' when he speaks. The black man in the suit is very shocked to see him and his actions show that he isn't to keen to follow through with the party that the other black man wants to have. These camera angles show the two different representations that the producer shows as the black man in the suit is very career minded and the other prioritises partying, drugs and girls. These two are two main ethnicity stereotypes for black men.

Secondly the next camera angle that represented ethnicity is the medium shot of the two french maids who are outside a customers door. This medium shot allows us to identify there profession by there costume and the cleaning props and trolley they use. The lady at the front acts very confident and controlling where as the other is very quite and conscience about herself. There is a very mysterious non-diegetic sound that is playing in the background when the action match shot of the maids opening the door and walking through. This could show that something is going to happen that is very secretive.  There is a close up of the money on the side and at this time we realise that these french ladies are beginning to dance through the long shot and several medium close ups of the two french ladies taking off there clothes. This shows that the producer has represented foreign women to do anything to earn extra money as they could be under payed and shows them to be sexual figures. The non-diegetic music in the background is very pop and is in a foreign language this relates to the maids and how the use of there french accents is also there to represent there ethnicity.

In this situation there is a Chinese man sitting on the bed. There is a close up of the money he is paying the maids to strip. The producer has represented his Chinese ethnicity to be very wealthy as there is a lot of money on the side that he can spend on what ever her likes.

The next camera angle is a medium close up of the italian chef the producer has represented this ethnicity to be very over exaggerated with his actions and the sound of a kiss with is asynchronous which shows his overly friendly personality. His accent is very strong which represents that he is italian as well. The next shot is then a medium shot of the white british man and the short italian man with there arms around each other which looks very uncomfortable which indicates there fake friendship. After the women and man exist the room the real relationship between them is revealed as there strong and offensive language is shown by them. The non diegetic sound starts getting faster to show the tension between the two chefs. Lastly there is a extreme close up of the Italian man picking up a knife and a close up reaction shot of the british man with a nervous expression on his face. This identifies that the producer has represented the Italian ethnicity to be very dangerous where as the white british man to be very verbally confident but physically scared.

In conclusion the representation of ethnicity in this piece is shown through contrasts of different ethnicity's or the same. Stereotypes help to represent each one and this clip doesn't go against ethnicity's but instead states the obvious of each ethnicity using stereotypes.

Media section B

“Successful media products depend as much upon marketing and distribution to a specific audience as they do upon good production practices.” To what extent would you agree with this statement, within the film area.

You may make reference to other areas in your answer. • Film • Music • Newspapers • Radio • Magazines • Video games.

Marketing, distribution and production practises are both two big factors that media products must aim high with to get a successful outcome for there film. This is to make sure there film will be popular to there target audience. The marketing and production must fit the appropriate target audience by using the correct conventions needed otherwise they will not achieve the profits they want.

Both marketing and production are both very important in a film an example of a very successful marketing film company is 'Disney' in my opinion I think that this film company have become very popular through all there marketing and distribution success. This is because through the years of this film companies existence they have covered beyond the amount of marketing an average company does. They have released sound tracks, have a disney store full of products from every film made, there is two disney worlds abroad, they own there own studio, TV channel and record label. An example of a disney film using these marketing techniques is 'Cinderella' this film has costumes for young boys and girls to dress up in which will excite them even more for the film. There is also a sound track to advertise the film even more.

The specific audience for 'Disney' is young children this is because the films contained the conventions of beginning as a cartoon, using characters of princesses and princes which follows Props theory, using bright colours and an easy storyline for young children to understand. By Disney having a specific audience has helped them build up there popularity. Further more now Disney has extended there ability and made Disney films that contain real actors and actresses. An example of film that does this is 'Alice in Wonderland' this is an example of a film that has caught the attention of a wider audience. This film stars very well known famous people. One being Johnny Depp which would automatically get people intrigued to watch this film through his talent. This film was very successful and relied a lot on its marketing and distribution to promote this film however this film did not lack production practise as the quality of the film was a high standard otherwise it wouldn't get as much viewers.

In contrast with the film company Disney who are a huge marketing company is a smaller film company called ' Four channels' as a film that they had produced was 'Trainspotting' this is an example of a film that relies on the practise production over the marketing and distribution. This company is very small and isn't a company that will be the first that someone would think of. However the film 'Trainspotting' that they released was a very successful film and the profit they made was very high compared to the money they spent on it. This film company became more popular through the quality of film not the marketing. Even though there was marketing taken place one being in a newspaper.

Overall I feel that even though marketing and distribution is a major factor that any film company must have to make there film company very popular. The quality of the film and the practise of production comes before this as without a high quality film to release to audiences the marketing and build up to the film will be a waste of time as the audience will not go to see or not buy the film once they've seen in it because it was a disappointment compared to the marketing and distribution.

Section B

To what extent does digital distribution affect the marketing and consumption of media products in the area of media you have studied?

Digital distribution affects the marketing and consumption of media in a positive way because firstly the companies that release films and market them to the public will only benefit if the cost of duplicating film prints and sending them to cinemas is fees able. I have researched and discovered that the UK is one of the most expensive markets in the world to release films with. However using a digitally produced film will deliver quicker and more reliable. It is now delivered to cinemas through a lock email which is a much safer way so that the distributors know its secure and private.

Also because of digital distribution its made it easier for distributors to deliver newly cut digital trailers to cinemas at very short notice. However digital distribution affects the marketing and consumption of media products in the film industry also because more people tend to watch films in the comfort of their own homes, rather than taking trips to the cinema, and have become more dependent on the internet.

Therefore when companies market there film they do everything digitally via the internet. This was by websites, YouTube and televisions for example advertisement between programs. This allows the public to become aware of the film and to really want to watch the film as there excited about it. Most of the people these days wait until the film has been released on DVD so they can permanently have it or watch it on the internet. This has therefore decreased the film industry in consumption as less people are paying for a ticket to go watch the film. Further more most of them were paying online distributors as packages to watch the film for example love film and Netflix.
