Why are Disney so successful?
Disney is one of the main conglomerates and is part of the top 6 that are dominated by the oligopoly Hollywood . Disney is pixar's parent company and Disney owns the three stages which are production, distribution and exhibition this makes them vertically integrated. This allows the company Disney to take risks and make the three stages of making bigger and better. The Disney film pirates of the Caribbean 2 is the highest grossing film in opening history. This is because in the production side of filming because Disney have huge media ownership they can cast the big hollywood stars for example the main character johnny Dep playing the part of Jack sparrow this will immediately grab a wide audience as because he is well known star then people who enjoy watching films that he is in will purchase the film or go to the cinema to watch it. Also because of the status and money that Disney have they have the ability to block areas off to film in and this has been done in different countries. For example pirates of the Caribbean was filmed in Dominican, Bahamas and California. This allows a more wider audience to be attracted as the film is beginning to become aware to an international audience.
In the marketing stage because Disney own 11 theme parks, 2 water parks, several television networks, television channels they can use technological convergence to raise huge awareness for each disney film they release. For example the current film 'Frozen' that has been a huge success has a sound track that has been made this can be played on a radio station where people can access this music from their own radio or tablet. This sound track is also advertised on the disney website which shows technological convergence as because of the development of technology the majority of the audience use the web 2.0 therefore promoting on a website will grab a wider audience then on a poster in an area where a wide audience arent going to be. This sound track also shows cross media convergence as it shows the music medium and film medium coming together to promote them both even more. Disney also have theme parks where characters are walking around in. If Disney had a new release then they would simply put the main characters in the park to promote the film for example Buzz and Woody from Toy story to interact with the people who have paid to come into the Disney parks.
Disney follows a formula in order to make sure that every film they make and release are successful in box office. This is done by Disney making sure that each of there films are targeted at families therefore making sure the language is appropriate for children and the humour is funny for both children and adults.
In comparison with Disney a smaller British company Microwave film London and distributor's Revolver and film 4 who made the film 'Ill Manors' isn't a conglomerate therefore will find it harder to fund the film as they don't own any subdiary companies therefore they cant take many risks as they have a budget this makes them horizontally integrated. This is shown through the cast. The cast aren't well known therefore have been chosen purely because of talent this will make it harder to gain a wider audience as consumers don't know who they are and whether they are interested in their acting. The location that Ill Manors was set in was in east london this location want attract an international audience as they haven't heard of the locations however if it was set by Big Ben and The London eye then other countries would recognise the land marks and understand the film better.

Class and status representation
In this clip I am going to show evidence for the way the producer represents class and status from the camera angles, sound, mise-en-scene and editing.
The first camera angle I identified was a medium close up of the young girl she is wearing hoop earnings and a school blouse this shows that she is lower class as she is not in employment as she is still in education. She says the words 'How can you talk about family when you didn't care about your own child'.As a young girl stereotypically the upper class would not become pregnant at a young age as they have too much status. In terms of syntactic levels the young girl is the dominant figure in the photograph as she is very close to the camera and is the only person in the shot. This shows her importance in this scene because of her loud prosodic tones and chav hoop earnings conveys her lower class.
The next shot I identified was the high angle shot of the school girl coming through the door. The reason this was a high angle shot is to show the location of the action. The house looks very spacious and a big stair case which shows the representation of middle class as they are stereotyped to have a big house for a family. However the school girl who walks through the door has come through with the door already open this represents how this house isn't owned by the upper class as they would have to lock and shut their doors to protect all their private properties and expensive belongings. This camera angle is a high angle to show the school girl to have a low status as the shot is angled looking down at her. This shows that the lower class don't have high authority and importance as her costume of school uniform represents her as working class as she is again not employed and still in education.
Another camera shot I identified is a medium shot of the young school boy he is wearing a hoodie which is the symbolic sign that teenagers are stereotypically associated with this shows that he is working class because of what he is wearing as this is stereotyped of teenagers misbehaving by vandalism or crime. His accent is also very common and doesn't consist of standard English that is said well spoken this can also show the representation of working class don't have any standards.
Furthermore the next camera shot I identified is a close up shot that shows the boy towering over the girl who's head is slightly in the shot. The camera is angled at a low angle to show that the male is more powerful over the young girl. This is because he is showing threat to her through the previous camera shots showing he is the weapon of a gun. This shows that he is working class as he is an unemployed boy who is threatening to commit a crime this could be because of how stereotypically his up bringing could of reflected his behaviour. In contrast with this the girl is not as powerful as she is shown to be very subservient and weak. This shows that the producer has represented the working class males to be more powerful over the females.
Their is also a tilt shot of the boy walking down the road with the weapon of a gun in his hands. This also shows working class because of the crime he had recently committed. But also shows the representation of working class areas to be very unsafe because no one has stopped him from getting that gun and their isn't a shock that he is walking down the street with it.
Lastly the long shot of the boy sitting on the floor with police cars and police officers surrounding him shows that the middle class who are the police officers as the middle class are associated with high professions have more power and a higher status over the boy who is working class on the floor. This is shown through the levels as the police officers are a higher level than the boy. It also shows the hierarchy of power that is indicated in this shot as in this clip the producer represents the working class to be lower than the middle class.
The diegetic sounds of the police sirens and the previous gun shot and smashing glass on the floor or represent the conventions of the genre. It also shows the producer is representing the working class to be very dangerous and unsafe. Furthermore in the long shot there is several ambient sounds these are police sirens and the police officers shouting 'Put the gun down' these all are sounds in the background of the scene that establish the location and create the atmosphere to be very intimidating.
The mise-en-scene of this clip is the location that the main action is set is in a house this is to convey realism as the situation is something that could happen in real life. The genre of a soap has the convention of a death which shows that this situation is expected for the genre.
The props that are used in this clip is a gun the symbolic importance of this gun is that it what causes the action this also shows the representation of class as working class are stereotypically known to have crime involved in their life's. By having a gun in the setting creates the audience to become very unsettled and create fear for the young girls who are shown to be vulnerable.
The costumes construct a representation of a working class image because the three main characters are wearing school uniform. The girls uniform are short skirts and low ties with hoop earnings and the boy wearing a hoodie and chain. These all show that the representation of working class is that the younger generation are bought up to not have any standards in the way they look and to look very scruffy and careless. The character of the teachers in the car park have the dominant ideology of smart clothes are good therefore as an audience I can denote they are wearing suits and this connotes that they are a high status and middle class as they must have a job that is a high profession in this case teachers.
The actors all speak very loud and are mainly shouting all their dialogue this is because this is how the producer wanted to catch the audiences attention. All the actors/ actresses belong in their setting as its a typical street where working class would live and the police who are middle class would be around more as in this clip it shows the working class to be represented as a very dangerous place to live.
The lighting is all very naturalistic through out the clip this is to show the realism in the acting and to make the audience believe whats going on.
The editing is that there is straight cuts this is to keep the audience understanding what's happening. There is a reaction shot of the girl crying this has been done to allow the audience to sympathise with her and feel her fear. This clip has been edited for dominance as the character of the boy in the hoodie has been afforded more screen time this has been done to indicate that he is the main representation of working class and is the character that causes the main action. The binary opposites in this clip are that the producer represents the good in the teacher being middle class who looks out for everyone shown in the last sequence where she makes sure the women crying is comforted in contrast the bad where the representation of working class in the boy has committed a crime.

section B
To what extent does digital distribution affect the marketing and consumption of media products in the media area studied you have? Candidates must focus on one of the following media areas: Film
Digital distribution is a new technology that is the process of delivering the film content digitally to an exhibitor. This has had a big impact on the film industry because it is a much quicker and easier way to deliver a film which makes the release of the film much quicker. This is done by a small and compacted hard drive. These are the advantages of digital distribution however the disadvantages of digital distribution is that because their is so many copies of the one film it makes it easier for people to copy the film this is known as piracy. An example of this is Sky Fall this was the first ever James Bond film to be filmed digitally therefore piracy is a key element that Sony had to deal otherwise the profits of this film would decrease.
Marketing is the advertising of a film this can be done online as a film could create their own website where consumers can watch interviews with the main stars, watch teaser trailers and get a better understanding of the film. Companies can also advertise the film on billboards, posters located on bus stops and train stations however this wouldn't be as successful as online marketing because their is a wider audience online then there is in individual area. Sky Fall is an example of 360 degrees marketing this is because Sony marketed the film globally to gain a wider audience. Sony did this by advertising the film online forming a fan base this is known as localisation and is a website that anyone can access by the internet. The company Sony also used cross media convergence to advertise the film because the singer adele released a song that was in the actual film which advertised two different medium contributing to their profit.
Consumption is a way that consumers view a film this can be done by going to a cinema, waiting for the DVD to come out, online for example netflix or illegally by piracy or illegal websites.
Digital distribution affects the marketing and consumption because if the film was being distributed to netflix then the marketing and advertisement would be aimed online
