Anaylse of the Greek yoghurt advert

Regional identity is where you identify the uniqueness of there region from the characteristics that they contain which include appearance, costume, accent, setting, sounds and status. Some countries are very diverse now but the traditional distinctive features they have will separate there culture from other regions.
Regional Identity

This Greek yoghurt advert uses the key term regional identity this is expressed by firstly the young boy has the appearance of dark hair and olive skin this shows he is from Greece. His clothing is very light and thin materialised which suggests he is in a hot country as he is from Greece. The young boys dialogue when announcing to his mum the cow has been let out is a language most English people don't understand therefore by this advert being aimed for England this was used to show to us that the region this is set in isn't England but abroad in Greece. The young boys mum has also olive skin and dark hair which also conveys she is from Greece. The mum's first appearance is in the house this indicates that she has the stereotype that a women stays in the house to cook and clean. As well as looking after the children but in this scenario child this is shown when the mum scruffs the young boys hair and takes him in to give him the Greek yoghurt to show how proud she is for retrieving there cow. The mum is wearing very light weight casual clothing that has no high status to it which implies she is of a low class as she doesn't work just adapts the roles of the stereotypical women.
The Setting has a huge amount of  land with mountains in the background this suggests they are living in the country side in Greece. There behaviour and actions are evidence that they are in the country side as the young boy runs from a long distance to his mum which indicates that the mum has no worry or concern that the young boy will get taken or hurt in anyway. This is because the country side is crime free and a very relaxed lifestyle. Also as the young boy takes his journey to find his cow there is a man riding his donkey on the path way they are travelling at a calm and slow pace this is because they live in the country side and there is no rush to get to places as the lifestyle is very easy and laid back. There is no roads or cars which prevents congestion this is why the man is riding his donkey this is also another indication that they are living in Greece. In there field there is a old wooden gate with low fences this has no technical security lock which is also more evidence that the country side is a very safe place to live. The sky's are blue and reflect heat which implies they are from a hot country as well.
The young boy and mum's cow is there to provide there milk this illustrates that this isn't set in present modern times as they couldn't go to the shops and buy pints of milk. The cow just follows the young boy by a lead rope without any hesitation or anger this shows that he is well trained and trusts the boy which indicates they have had this cow for a long time. As well as the cows got a very relaxed mood which suggests he is used to the casual lifestyle of the country side.
When the young boy runs through the traditional Greek house that have stone walls and thick windows and doors he runs past a women smacking her rugs down this is to clean and erase the dust from them. This is because in the time that this was set they didn't have washing machines or tumble dryers they had no choice but to hand wash everything. This was done in no rush as the hot weather in Greece creates the washing to dry very quickly as well as they are living in the country side. As the young boys journey is continued he finally finds his cow in the small village. The regions period of time they didn't have large shopping centres just small cobbled shops that provide there essentials to live. The cow was about to be killed by the local butcher has the butcher sharpens his knives. The young boy just comes and retrieves his cow from the butcher. The butcher doesn't react harshly as in the country side people are very kind and respective. The young boy takes his cow back to his field in a calming manner as again they are living in the country side.
When the mum and young boy get back into the house after safely putting the cow back. They enter the house which has a Greek look to it with wooden furniture and light walls to reflect the sun. The Greek yogurt is then given to the young boy. The mum then answers the telephone this doesn't fit the regional identity of the whole clip which brings across the message the director wants to bring across which is that this yogurt is still as delicious as it was in the 1960's.

Shot Types
In the Greek yoghurt advert there is range of shot types throughout the whole clip. The first shot type which begins the clip is the Establishing shot this is when the young boy opens the wooden gate and the shot establishes where the action takes place and gives some context to the clip. In this case the scenery is in a large spacious land with mountains in the background.

Then the shot changes to a Extreme close up on the cow this is to show the detailed features of the cow as well as this leading to another Extreme close up of the little boy this is again to show the detailed features e.g. eyes, mouth, nose and hands as well as his facial expressions and dialogue.

Next the shot is a Long shot where the young boy is letting his cow through the gate and out into the fields to run freely. The long shot is used as it establishes where they are and also the start of the journey the young boy is about take. This is affectively used as it has captured a large area of view for the viewers to see.

Once the young boy runs towards his own house and shouts to his mother the shot flows smoothly into a Medium close up on the mother. This is used as the camera shot wants to get in the ancient thick wooden windows and this allows getting her wait upwards. As well as the medium shot is a continues part of the journey and always flows from a long shot which is does.

The Wide shot is used after this when the young boy is racing down the hills and there is a man riding his horse slowly through the bridal stone path. This is a wide shot as it gets both the young boy and man riding his horse in the shot as well as the setting in the background. This is an interesting shot as it gets the important and non-important things in the shot. This shot must not be overused as it takes away the focus on the action.

The Long shot is used again to show the full length in which the young boy is running through the fields and it again establishes where he is and the journey he is taking.

There is a Close up shot used after this long shot of the bell ringing this is very seamless as the bell starts ringing and then the shot is taken onto the bell this is very complex and creates everything to keep a flow and fast rhythm. The close up shot is used to show key features and to put the focus on the main subject at the time which is the bell ringing. This also adds intensity to the clip.

This then leads to a Medium close up of the man who is on the top of a cobbled island pointing straight ahead when the young boy runs through. This shot is taken from waist upwards and is affective as it doesn’t show a huge amount of the setting and is very good at preparing the viewer for a close up or extreme close up.

Now the viewer is prepared the clip flows to an extreme close up of the elderly lady smacking her rugs to get the dust of off them and clean them. This is affective as it gives an insight of what period this clip is set and also shows her detailed features and reaction to the young boy running through her small street.

This leads to a Long shot of the young boy running through the small narrow street and then the shot is titled at an angle to show the young boy and the small area of house from above them. This is affective as it varies the angle of the shot to make the clip more interesting and not tedious and also establishes where the young boy is by adding a bit of context in the shot.

As the young boy finds his cow it runs through to a Wide shot again this is of the butcher in the process of killing the cow. This is a very dramatic moment and the wide shot is used to allow the viewers to see what is exactly going on and to see part of the environment in the background so that the focus is more on the situation and less on establishing where they are.

The Extreme close up is used to clearly see the mans facial expressions and to portray fear to the viewers as he is about to kill the young boys cow.

Gracefully the young boy drags his cow away and the man looks at him with a confused face. This shot is a Long shot which shows where the young boy is taking his cow and it also sets the location again and feeds more context of where the clip is located and there regional identities.

Finally the young boy leads the cow back into their field and shuts the old wooden gate. This is an establishing shot as both the young boy and the mother are standing next to each other and the shot widens the space to show where the journey began from.

Lastly the young boy runs into his house with his mother and sits down with a bowl of Greek yogurt that his mother gives him round the table. This is a Master shot it is used as it shows the limit of the shot e.g. they are sitting around a table.
Sound Types

There are a huge range of sound types in this clip they are diegetic, non-diegetic, synchronous and asynchronous. The diegetic sounds are the sound of water spraying out, the opening of the gate, the cows faint noises, the hooves of the donkey, the young boys feet running down the hill, the bells ringing, the butcher sharpening his knives, the cow chewing on his food, the closing of the gate, the yogurt bowl being placed on the table, the telephone ringing and the noise of the young boy eating his yogurt.

The Non- diegetic sounds are the traditional Greek music being played through out the whole clip and the narrator at the end of the clip speaking a short monologue.
The Synchronous sounds are the gate opening and closing, the faint noises the cow makes, the running noises of the young boy, the hooves of the donkey, the second part of the bells ringing, the carpet being
Synchronise sounds are the gate opening and closing, the young boys feet running through the fields, the faint noises of the cow, the hooves from the donkey, the second part of the bells ringing, the smacking of the carpet, the sharpening of the knives and the yoghurt pot being put on the table.
The asynchronous sounds are the water spraying, the telephone ringing and the first part of bells ringing.
Mise-en-scene
In this clip there are large spacious lands and huge mountains in the background this suggests they are living in a country environment. The grass is very dried out and the sky looks very humid which suggests they are in a hot country. They are wearing light clothes which also suggest the heat is burning. They own a cow which suggests that how they make money for a living. As the young boy runs through the streets and tiny village the walls are all cobbled and made of washed out stone which suggests the town is very ancient and old. The houses are not insulated they are small and over look the beautiful fields. The rusty bells ringing suggests this is not a modern period of time. Also the clip is set in a hot country. The elderly lady smacking her rugs and cleaning them also indicates that the time is not modern and that the weather is very hot as they have all there washing out very high up to get as much sun as possible. There is no cars about but herds of sheep and a man standing in a local area about to kill the cow which suggest they are not in England. The clip is advertising Greek yogurt which suggests the clip is located in Greece.

Exam prep power point

Editing

Editing in the Doc Martin clip
At the beginning of the clip there is a close up shot which then flows into the entrance of Doc Martin. Then in the shots before the sink leaks and all the chaos happens there is a lot of eye line matches as when both the father and son plumbers are looking up to Doc martin and he is looking down this is because Doc Martin has more power and his level of standing up means the plumbers have to look up to him as they are at a lower level for both there status and height.

As the sink leaks and all the chaos begins to happen the pace becomes much quicker to add more impact to the scene. As well as the telephone coming in to allow them to do more cuts and different shots. Once the dog arrives in the house there is more eye line matches with Doc Martin as he is very stressed and is shouting at the dog while looking down on him. Then this leads to another shot of the dog this is to show that Doc Martin was shouting at the dog even though his eyes indicated that he was.

When Doc Martin is walking the dog to the police office. There is an action match as he goes to open the door and then the next shot is him coming through the door this is an action match shot as the two shots are both related to Doc Martin opening the door.

Another eye line shot is where Doc Martin is staring down at the teacher in the school and she is looking up at him. This part of the clip expresses huge intensity.

Regional Identity in the Doc Martin clip

Regional Identity

In the Doc Martin clip there is use of the term regional identity this is because Doc Martin is wearing a smart suit as he is a doctor, this present time doctors wear a certain uniform or there own chosen clothes. There fore Doc Martin comes from the city as mainly people in the city dress in suits. Whereas the plumbers were dressed more casually and had uniform on. The dad was very relaxed as when the sink leaked he did not panic he just sat there finishing his food off. This implies that he from the country  and people from the country side are known for the calmness and relaxed manners. Whereas Doc Martin was very angry and stressed when the sink leaked and the dog came in the house this indicates he is from the city.

When the dog came in to the small house Doc Martin was very frustrated and confused at how the dog managed to get in the house. This is more evidence that he is from the city as dogs do not run freely in the city but in the country side they do because of the spacious land and how there is not huge amounts of crime in the country side. Whereas the plumbers and the young girl who were in the house was not surprised at all by the dog coming in the house therefore they are used to the country life style.

In the clip the younger plumber who was the son of the older plumber was explaining difficult words to the two older characters and understanding what they meant in the sentences. This shows that not all country people are the same they all are not as intelligent as another.

The houses are very small and compact and they are all next to eachother. Some are even built in the town. This is evidence that the region they are in is the country side as in the city the houses are mainly apartments and they are very high in height.

As Doc Martin was walking through the town there was not any traffic or hardly any cars parked or being driven this suggests that country people are more active or that everything is very close and are a walking reach. As well as the noise of sea gulls and the wind being very breezy suggests that they are by the sea side.

In the police office the police man was hoovering the floor this suggests that there is not any crime which indicates that he is in the country side because the country side is very quite, relaxed and mainly crime free.

Anaylse of Friends clip

In the friends clip there are a range of shots within the episode. Firstly it starts of with an establishing shot which is in the appartment this allows the viewer to see where the location is and gives some context of where the action is about to take place.

Then this leads smoothly into a medium close up where Monica is asking Rachel to talk to her outside
this is affective as it just puts the focus on Monica by allowing us viewers to see her facial expressions, features and even though we cant see that Monica is talking to Rachel her eye contact shows this.As well as the monlogue indicates Monica is talking to Rachel. As Rachel walks out into the hall way with Monica the long shot is used. This is used to indicate that there is just rachel and monica in this senerio and it is used to capture a large area of space. Also long shots are used for more then one person which there is. As Monica and Rachels conversation happens the over the shoulder shot takes place. This is the most common shot to be used in a conversation. At times in there conversation there is a medium close up shot this is just there to brake up the over the shoulder shot so it isnt overused or the audience get bored. It is also there to see more detail into there facial expressions and reactions. After there conversation has ended there is an extreme close up on Joey when he opens his door and asks if he can help with anything. This is because Rachel has ran into her appartment and not allowed Monica to come in which is why Monica is banging on the door to be let in. Extreme close up is used to focus on a particular part of a person e.g the face, eyes, mouth or hands. These shots can create a feeling of intimacy as shown in this clip and they convey a mood or emotion. Finally Monica is let in and this flows through to a master shot. This is where it shows the limit of the action which in this case is the table area. After this the other the shoulder shot is used again as there is a conversation. This conversation also uses a slight shot reverse shot where the camrea is on Rachel but Monica is speaking this is to see Rachels expression and reaction by hearing Monicas voice being the response. Lastly there is a medium close up shot where Ross is not in the shot any more but Rachel and Monica are. The meduim close up is used as the director only wanted to see there wasit up and this shot is very ideal as it is mainly used when someone is delieving information and as Monica is gesturing with her arms this allows the viewer to see her arm gestures very clear and allow them to be fully in the shot. This follows through to the long shot where they hear the banging noise of joey trying to brake in without realising monica has already managed to get in the appartment. The long shot is targeted from there legs and above. This is used affectivly as re-establishes the scene of the clip and the long shot is followed through to where the sound is coming from.

Sounds

In the friends clip there are two differenet sound types used these are digetic and non-digetic sounds the digestic sounds that are used are:
  • Monica opens the door to ask Rachel if she can speak to her.
  • When Rachel closes the door from enterting the hall way.
  • When Rachel stamps her feet.
  • The noise of Rachel throwing Monicas washing on the floor.
  • Faint noises of car horns in the back ground.
  • Banging on the door from Monica when Rachel locks her out.
  • When Ross puts his coffe down on the kitchen table.
  • Joey banging through the door to try and brake in.
There are also non-digetic sounds used in this clip they are:
  • Laughing and clapping from the crowd
  • Several times a tune is played
The asynchronous sounds are when there is a sound being made or created but its not on the screen of the shot. These are used in this friends clip they are:
  • Beeping of the cars.
  • Laughing and clapping from the crowd.
  • When Rachel stamps her feet when the camera is on a medium close up shot.
  • Joey trying to brake in.
  • The several tunes played.
The synchronouse sounds are when sounds are made or created which are on screen. These are used in this clip as they are:
  • The door opening.
  • Closing of the door.
  • Voices.
  • Rachle stamping her feet in the long shot.
  • When Rachel throws Monicas washing on the floor.
  • Slamming of the door.
  • Banging noises on the door.
  • When Ross puts his coffee cup on the table.
Mise-en-scene
Rachel is wearing a a very smart dress and has put a lot of effort into her hair and makeup this suggest she has been out with friends, family or even a date. When she walks in the appartment ross is sitting down with scruffy clothes on and a sad faacial expressions. This indicates he is feeling very low this conveys he is weak and powerless. Rachel sits down to his level to express her sympathy towards him this implies she is a very caring and kind person.

The apparment is very modern as the furniture is up to date and the open planned layout indicates a classy side. The window leads out to other appartments which is why i can suggest they are living in an appartment. There is alot of furniture which suggests they accomadate for a lots of people. The walls are basic and a simple colour which conveys the appartment is for unisex but overall the house is very colourful which suggsts that the charcters of friends arent dull charcters. The kitchen space has a table and chairs which suggest they have a sit down meal which is very tranditional. The kitchen is full of recipe books which shows the person who lives there could have an intrest in cooking. The appartment is very organsied and tidy which conveys they have respect for where they live.

The hall way is very spaciouse and wide which also is evidence they are very modern people in a modern time. Rachel and Monicas actions are very exgeratted which suggests they are comfortable with there neighbours  hearing there drama. Joey who is there friend lives opposite them this conveys they are very close with eachother. There door is open and they are very releaxed about this. This could either suggest they have no crime or are not very aware of any crime happening. The hall way lights are very dull which sets the mood for Rachel and Monicas arguement where as the appartment has bright lights as this is where Rachel and Monica come to a decision with eachother.

Home work 12th september

Select a five minute approxament clip of a T.V drama from utube and do a textual analyse using shot types, sound and mis-en-scene. Include the video clip of the beginning of the clip at the start and images through out.

Mise-en-scène

Doc martin was wearing a suit this was a clue that he was a doctor as this shows he was a higher class then others. Where as the father and son who were plumbers fixing the sink were wearing overalls which are not as smart and formal as Doc Martins uniform therefore they are a lower class as they are manual workers.

In the house there was boxes which could indicate he had just moved into the house. The room was very dark and dull which could conveys that the house was an old cottage. As well as the sink leaking is evidence that the cottage is old and has a lot of delicate things that need to be fixed. When the dog appears through the door as the door is wide open this implies that they have no worries of crime coming into the house as they are living in the contry side.As well as the dog just being there indicates they are in a country house.

As Doc martin is walking through the streets they are very narrow and the buildings are old and traditional. The scenery also has hills in the back which identifies the clip is set in the country side.

When Doc martin enters the police station the police officer is hoovering this implies that the police officer has not got anything to do as the streets are very quite and there is no crime happening as the people are all honest and kind. The height of the doors are much smaller which indicates the police station is an older property.

The scenery is established by the sea side through the breeze and the wind. Also people can happily walk around the streets admiring the views with no stress at all. This is conveyed by Doc Martin filling out a prescription which shows relaxation as there is no danger or rush while he is doing it. This would never happen in a town situation as the chaotic streets and business of people there would be no chance of this happening.

The school is very old as people can just overlook the class rooms this would not happen in this modern time.Once Doc Martin is called over to help with the food the boxes are shown as farm boxes and the food is not in bulks which indicated that the lady owns a small village shop in the country side. As well as there just being cabbage and vegtables indicates thats the food came from an alotment where fresh vegtables are grown.

Sound Terms

The four different sound terms are:

  • Diegetic- any sounds that naturally occur in the story e.g the sound of the sea gulls
  • Non- diegetic - sounds that are not naturally occurring in the story e.g music
  • Synchronous- this is when the sound occurs from whats on the screen
  • Asynchronous- this is when the sound occurs from off the screen

Sounds in the Doc Martin clip

There was a sound of two beats to begin the scene. The sound of water which was leaking from the sink was used loudly and was very extreme to show how immense the leak was.

As well as the telephone ringing at the time of the chaos to cause more bussiness and stress towards Doc Martin. There was the sound of a dog barking continuously to create the atmosphere to become much louder. An upbeat tune was played while Doc Martin was walking this tune was played every time he was walking to emphasis his speed and to make you wonder where he was off to. The sound of sea gulls were in the back ground to indicate that they were by the sea side. There was an intense beat that paused and played when Doc Martin was staring mysteriously at the lady with an eye patch to make the audience question why he is staring strangely at her and to show intensity. The loud noise of the lady throwing cabbage in the boxes was to put impact on how heavy they were and why she needed help lifting them.

The term diegetic is when the sound is naturally occurring in the story this happens in the Doc Martin clip when the telephone rings, the rustling of the pillow and the noise of the plates moving in the scene when the the water leaks from the sink. but also the dog barking constantly is also diegetic. When Doc Martin is walking the dog to the police station there is a diegetic sound of the shop door closing and the sea gulls in the back ground even though they are not in the shot it is still classed as diegetic sound. When the hoover is being heard it is introduced before it is in the shot this appears very seamless and we are not supposed to notice. Lastly at end there is a diegetic sound of the lady who is teaching cutting paper this is a very faint sound but is still heard.

The term non- diegetic is when the sound is not naturally occurring this happens in the clip when the two beats at the start play as they were made As well as when the music plays when Doc Martin says the word "as for you" to the dog who is always barking this is to add suspense that he is about to do something to the dog.

Also the music in the background when Doc Martin is walking is Non diegetic as  its not a naturally occurring sound. Lastly when Doc Martin is staring at the girl the music is also non- diegetic.

Synchronous is the term used when the sound occurs from whats on the screen. This was when Doc Martin was rustling the pillow as this was done on screen. When the water hugely leaked as this was on screen when it occurred. The dog barking started of as an synchronous sound as the dog was not on screen when he began to bark but then when the dog came on screen the sound became an asynchronous sound. The shop door closing was an synchronous sound as it was in shot. The dog crying as he was on screen when he was making the high pitch crying sound when Doc Martin left the police station. The closing of the car boot was an synchronous sound . As well as the cutting of the paper and the noise of the lady moving the boxes and throwing the cabbage in the boxes was also synchronous.

The term Asynchronous is when the sound occurs from off the screen. This is when Doc Martin moves the sound of plates in the kitchen this was not on screen but the noise was heard. The telephone ringing was a sound that was an asynchronous sound. The dog barking was not a asynchronous to begin with but then was after the dog came into the shot. This happens with the hoover as well as you can hear the hoover before it come into shot but the sound is still going when it comes into shot. Also the sound of the sea gulls and sound of people walking are and very faintly you can hear the sound of people shouting which is asynchronous.

Shot types in Doc Matin

At the beginning it starts of with a MASTER SHOT this is to show where the scene and action is about to take place. Then when the characters are talking there is a SHOT REVERSE SHOT as the camera is close up on just one character so we cant tell who they are speaking to the only way we can tell is by looking at the heights which show there status. When Doc Matin becomes angry there is a medium close up which emphasises his reaction. When Doc Martin is walking to the police station there is a FOLLOWING SHOT and there is signals of sea gull which the ESTABLISHING SHOT indicates that the village is by the sea. when DOC Martin is talking to the police officer there is a MEDIUM CLOSE UP SHOT. The EXTREME LONG SHOT is used when Doc Martin is walking from the police station as well as when he is walking up to the lady introducing herself to him. Lastly there is CLOSE UP SHOTS when Doc Martin is staring at the teacher which a patch on her eye.

Second thoughts on Doc Martin Clip

My second thoughts on the Doc Martin Clip is that as i watched the clip again i listend to the everything more in detail and realised that the sound affects and short parts of music in the clip made the character Doc Matin's personality much more emphasised on his anger. This caused the atmosphere to become more intense. As Doc Martin walked through the town the camera was close up this could be like this to emphasis how cramped the streets are and to show what time the clip was set in. nearer the end of the clip when Doc Martin was talking to the lady he became very compettive and judgemental with other people in his job this shows another side to him that he did'nt show at the start.

Initial thoughts on Doc Martin clip

My initial  thoughts on the Doc Martin clip are that at the beginning of the clip there was a lot of chaos as the sink had huge leak, the telephone was ringing continously and a stray dog came through the door. This drove Dr martin to go insane and get very aggitated with everyone and everything. As he  began to shout orders out to everyone, the chaotic atmosphere began to become organzied this in my eyes indicated that he had the most power. As he lead the innocent stray dog through the cobbled streets his pace was immensely fast which shows he was in a rush and had no affection towards the stray dog. As he reached the police station he was very demanding and too the point with the police officer as he had no intention of keeping the dog. The character Doc Martin i feel thinks that my being uptight and dismissing people very quickly gets him through the day.
