Representation of disability- summer
In this clip I'm going to show the representation of Disability through camera shots, sound, mise-en-scene and editing. The definition of disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a persons movements, sense or activities.
The first camera shot I identified that shows the representation of disability was a birds eye view high angle shot this shows the scene of a bedroom the diegetic sound of the boy on the right narrating shows that he is talking perfectly fine with older and maturer furniture therefore he is represented to be 'normal' Whereas the boy on the left has bright child like bed covers with toys on the floor this shows that he could have an disability through being represented to be younger than what he is and by having to rely on sharing a room with his brother because he isn't capable of doing things without his help. This high angle shot allows us as the consumers to see the contrast between the brothers this allows us to identify and see the disability much easier. The diegetic sound of the upbeat music contrasts with the diegetic sound of the voice over of the boy who is 'normal' represented to be very arrogant and not respectful over his brothers disability this is through the words 'last summer I decided to kill my brother' where as the diegetic upbeat music establishes the disabled boy as very happy and jolly. This camera angle also zooms inwards this is at a slow pace and is there to show movement and to see closer into the contrast between the two brothers.
The second camera shot I identified to represent disability is a close up shot of the brother who is handicapped his appearance is obvious that he is represented to have a disability and his very simple language of a diegetic speech 'I like weetabix' this represents disability to be simple minded compared to the other brother who's vocabulary is very complex when he speaks. Before this there is a close up shot of the other brother who is represented to be 'Normal' saying 'you ate all the bloody weetabix' the harsh language that he uses to speak to his brother who has a disability is very rude and shows that the producer has represented this character to have more control over people with disability which shows that disability in this clip is shown to be weak and powerless.
There is another close up of the brother who is represented to be 'normal' explaining with diegetic speech to his brother who has a disability about 'how they kills pigs' he uses very graphic words for example ' 10,000 volts straight to there head' the boy who is represented to have a disability replies in another close up shot with 'I want to be a vegetarian' this shows that the producer has represented disability in this clip to be extremely influenced through who's around them and to be frightened easily.
Another camera shot is a medium shot of the back of the fathers back his diegetic speech saying ' go keep on an eye in him will ya, I don't want him making a mess like yesterday' this shows that the producer is representing disability in this clip being unable to do simple tasks without assistances.
Next there is a long shot that I have identified showing the representation of disability this shows the brother represented to be 'normal' walking along the path with his brother who has a disability following him. This shows that the producer has represented disability through following other people's actions this is a stereotypical child like thing to do. This clip also shows that the brother who is represented to be 'normal' doesn't want to be associated with his brother who has a disability as he's walking a head of him this is very rude and indicates that he has no symphony for his brother and treats helping him as a chore.
Theres another long shot of 'Ben' learning to ride his bike with his dad's help this shows that the producer has represented disability to be slow learners and to always have to have someone they can depend on. While this camera shot is being shown there is a diegetic voice over of the other brother saying' you have to always read them books and buy them educational toys' this shows that the representation of disability in this clip is that the boy who has a disability always has to be deeply taught about education because of there needs they struggle with this.
Theres another high angle shot of the brother who is represented to be 'normal' drawing on his page instead of listening to the teacher this shows that this could be an escape for him because looking after his brother who has a disability is a lot of work and he has to work his life around his brothers.
Lastly there is a medium close up shot of the brother who has disability 'Ben' showing a reaction shot of him being very scared and worried this is because his brother who is meant to take him home has left him this shows that the producer has represented disability to be very un independent and always relying on others because they struggle to to things on there own because of there disability.
The miss-en-scene of this clip is that the lighting is very basic and duel this is because it shows the feeling of the diegetic narrating of the brother who is represents to be 'normal' to be very depressed and an angry that he has to always look after his brother.
The editing of this clip is that there are straight cuts and this is to keep the shots flowing and at a pace that wont confuse the audience. The cuts are very fast at the end when the brother who has a disability is on the bus this is to show all the action happening on the bus and to emphasis how scared Ben is.
